To us it was a bit strange that the capital city has such a small railway station. We came by train from Toronto and after a few days we went from it to Montreal. I did use a walking stick and the staff was very kind and help me with the luggage. There was only one small kiosk where we could buy our breakfast on the day we travelled to Montreal which was closed when we came in the morning and when it opened immediately a long row of travellers appeared but there were only a few (I think 3) tables with chairs. We were lucky to be among the first as the other passengers needed to sit in the waiting area. There was nice display of model locomotives.

This is a relatively small train station with limited amenities. It's situated a few kilometres outside Downtown Ottawa, but you can get to the city center in about 10 minutes by the nearby O-Train light rail. Boarding for Via Rail trains is fairly simple and organized, however, my train to Toronto took much longer than scheduled.

I am relatively new to train travel. This is my first time in Ottawa station. Arrived late on a Tuesday, tons of cabs waiting out front, snd someone there to help with getting cabs for everyone. Very orderly, one level train station with nice clean bathrooms, great signage. A coffee shop open daily 7-6 weekdays, 8-6 weekends) with drinks, snacks and sandwiches. Lots of vending machines. A manned desk and lots if people around to ask for help.

Very clean train station with few amenities. We pre-booked our trip a few months ago. It is our first time traveling by train in Canada. We were unsure of the procedure, so we went to the ticket booth to ask how to proceed. The person at the counter was curt to the point of rudeness. Single word answers and very flippant until he thought to ask if we were business class. We were not. His attitude softened slightly and reluctantly gave us instructions. Really put us off.
For first time traveller's leaving from Ottawa, know that all your information is printed on your ticket. We had never seen a train ticket in this country so we're not aware of this. Also, b aware that there is a nice coffee counter with pastries but no real food options in the station. We had read this in other reviews, so we were aware of this. There is ample seating near the gates.
Other than the rude ticket agent, our experience at Ottawa Train Station was a pleasant one.

The only way to travel to Toronto is Business Class. The hospitality shown by employee's at the station were outstanding (from the Security, Ticket Counter, to the Porters all were first class.

We arrived from Toronto, not having been in the Ottawa train station for many years. It was a pleasure to navigate and the staff was very helpful. The platforms are level with the train, no steps to go up or down as in Toronto. There is a ramp into the station. Taxi service was well organized.

Thinking of going to Toronto from Ottawa. Take VIA (business class). Five hours of pampering from the VIA service managers, comfortable seats, wifi and during the day trips lots to look at. Choice of three meals to which the hot chicken was delicious.

The Ottawa Train Station opened in July 1966, following the closure of Ottawa’s historic Union Station, which operated near the Chateau Laurier between 1912 and 1966. When the station was being developed, Prime Minister Pearson pushed for a modern structure – one that might encourage more train travel during a time when it was being usurped by other methods of transportation (namely air). For that reason, Ottawa’s new train station was built in the “International style.” I will admit I had no idea what that was until I read up on it.
Apparently the term “International Style” is ambiguous with no universal set of defining characteristics. Instead, what constitutes the style seems to largely depend upon the country and context. Within Canada, this seems to imply structures that consist of a lot of glass and steel. The Ottawa train station, for example, is made up of a lot of exposed cantilevered trusses supported by large concrete piers. The “walls” of the station are made up of glass. The end result is a station that appears very “open” with strong elements of modernism. An earlier TripAdvisor report said this design made the station resemble “little more than a shed.” While that’s a fun comment to make for a chuckle, it misses the point: When this station was built, it was meant to project a futuristic image (hence the glass and steel). It was also supposed to serve as an early showpiece in preparation for Canada’s centennial celebrations (1967) – paying homage to the major role trains played in the early development of this country (why does this make me think of “Towards the Last Spike”?).
Curiously, the Ottawa Train Station was also recognized as one of “Canada’s Historic Places” in 1996 – a mere 30 years after it was built. I don’t know about you, but to be recorded as a “historic” place at the 30 year mark seems odd to me.
In any event, we spent very little time here. Arriving to the station late for our train to Montreal, we spent less than 15 minutes at the check-in line before making our way to the platform and boarding our VIA Rail train (thanks to the staff for being so efficient!). After spending the day in Montreal, we returned to Ottawa later that same evening. Thankfully, there were plenty of taxis waiting outside!
At day’s end, while I certainly appreciate the historical and cultural context of the train station, it didn’t really “wow” me from an architectural perspective. And I’m still kind of boggled by its “historic” status. C’est la vie?

Miguel at Ottawa station was awful. As a young girl travelling on my own, in another country, carrying 2 suitcases, I asked for help and he declined and walked away. Instead, as he walked away he told me I had to lift my 23kg case above my head onto the overhead compartment and if I couldn't then I shouldn't have it. I travelled 5000km with the case and managed fine bit funnily enough couldn't lift it above my head. Clearly in the wrong job for helping people. The Toronto train journey/station was much friendlier and actually helpful. Weird behaviour from Miguel.

Great place! A great experience.
(The cafe is seriously overpriced! Just awful. Bring food so you don’t have to shop in the station.!!!)

is there a car rental at the station if not where would the closest be ?
كُتب بتاريخ 8 نوفمبر 2018
I believe that there is, however, to be absolutely sure, here is my suggestion.
Simply go to the Ottawa Train Station's site and you should be able to find out. Failing that, give them a call.

Is there luggage storing service available at the station? Planning to stop at Ottawa on the way to Montreal for a few hours.
كُتب بتاريخ 24 مايو 2018
Yes, there is. I cannot recall the price, but the fee is minimal, considering the advantage.

Travelling wit 2 year okd child. Are there any restaurants within walking distance besides in train station? Are there any malls near by?
كُتب بتاريخ 8 مارس 2018
I'm not sure about walking distance, but we took a Lyft ride to the police station that is not too far away and it was only about $6. There were many places to eat around that area. The area around Via Rail is a bit isolated.
