Visited Juifen in the mountains outside of Taipei. The advertising pictures made it look like a really beautiful place with many lanterns and beautiful lights.
In reality, it’s a shopping destination with not much else to do. The narrow walkways are overrun with visitors and large tour groups.
The stores are mediocre, some with overpriced cheap Chinese junk souvenirs. Worst part is the long lines to get food and the super narrow streets. Nearly impossible to find parking nearby.
If you stay there in a hotel, be prepared to carry your luggage up steep walkways and stairs.
In my opinion, there isn’t anything special about Juifen unless you like the crush of crowds and overpriced souvenirs.
I do not recommend Juifen. Instead, rent a car and explore the mountains and coastal areas on your own.

Wow. Absolutely horrific. I have travelled all over the place and this was really at the top of my list of most depressing destinations. I should have known it was a tourist trap, and usually they have bright spots. This one however did not.
If you enjoy being shoved around by tourists and overcharged for basic things, or shopping for fake junk then by all means, be my guest. But here, I really wished I was home. This is my personal hell.

There are many souvenir shops, dessert shops and restaurants on the left and right sides of the steep slope and the left and right sides of the road that split from it. The steep slopes are quite hard to climb. There is a gradient and it feels narrow. It's hard to pass each other a bit. It will be a really cozy place. You can see the beautiful sea from the observation deck. This is a good view. When the sun goes down, the red lanterns look very beautiful. I think there were many shops selling cat goods. It was messy, but I think it is an interesting city.

It is dangerous because there are places where people with umbrellas pass each other and stairs slide.
Still, there was chaos here and there with scooters running normally through the shopping street. Be careful on rainy days. The day I stayed was a little scary because it was mountainous due to heavy rain and wind.
It might have been easier to take pictures because there were a few tourists.

It’s a very large area so prepare to walk through many different shops. Look for the must try foods and scenic spots. Many stores for souvenirs as well.

This place is a wonder as the variety of food and beverages, the market vendors are all welcoming and the food is great. We came on a hot day and refreshed on a draft beer and at another place a bubble drink. We loved this culture, foodie and bustling commercial area.

Came here when a little raining, cold and foggy.
A street market with small walking location, there is many street food here that u can try left and right.

To be honest I am not sure to understand what's all the fuss about Jiufen.
The old street is not authentic it's only souvenirs shops one after the other and the place is packed...
The golden waterfall was really not impressive. Typically one the place where reality doesn't meet expectations.
I guess it's fine for shopping but if you are after authentic things then don't bother and invest your time elsewhere (especially if you are short on time).
Maybe I am hard as it seems that Jiufen is quite popular for a lot of people but we didn't enjoy it much. I dunno didn't even bother to take photos here just to say

No interest, this hyper tourist village (mostly Chinese tourists) is crowded! These are just streets lined with Chinese kitty shops, restaurants. Many smells not very pleasant for a westerner. Apart from the 2 tea houses which are pretty, for the rest, circulate there is nothing to see. And a lot of steps, you have to know.
At night, they turn on the red lanterns, it's better but it's not worth a visit.

1) Best time to visit starting at 10AM so you can capture nice photos, alleys then have less people. You can get the best seats for your lunch before 11AM else, you need to line up because of tourist traffic. 2) Best views are prettiest during sunny days hence, check the weather before a visit. No need to catch the sunset as views are captivating enough during daytime.

Like other markets they start early and I think with one hours travel from Taipei if u started at 8.30am you would still catch the famous food shops. Even if not open you can catch the scenery.

I am bringing my 6 month old to Taipei next month and would like to visit jiufen. I am still nursing my baby. Does anyone know whether is there a nursing room at jiufen? Or is there a parent room where I can change baby's nappy. I am thinking of taking a train there. Does anyone know whether is there a nursing/parent room at Rui Fang station?

It is not advisable to bring an infant to Jiufen coz it is crowded with tourist. Stairs are steep too especially when u r carrying ur baby. No nursing station/room. There is no baby changing room on all their toilets

Get to Taipei train station first.
Take the MRT.
Then take the train heading for Reifun.
Next take the bus from Reifun to jiufen.
Because it is quite cheap, may be less than three hundred NT$.
The MRT takes NT20
The train is less than NT100
The bus is cheap.
It is sure to be a trip within your bargain if you don’t consider the taxi.
