Mandatory stop for those visiting the Gargano. The old town has two UNESCO sites (Saint Michael's Basilica, Swabian Castle) and with the mysterious Tomb of Rotari (in which some recognize the site of the Holy Grail). The temperature is always pleasant because we are about 800 meters above the sea. Views from the Belvedere of the entire coast to Barletta. You can continue your visit and arrive at the nearby Pulsano Abbey. Point of Sale of fresh fruit and vegetables every day and numerous shops selling local meat and cheese (mouth-watering). The Juno district (of medieval origin) is suggestive.

After a visit to the sanctuary of San Michele, a walk through the alleys is a must. The historic center is characterized by narrow streets that go up and down the hill embellished with small shops selling typical products of the area. The views along the walk are beautiful

The village is vast and located on a hill with the typical strictly white houses, the castle dominates high up near the car parks where there are now works along the access road, unfortunately the restaurants and various types of shops are all concentrated in the sanctuary area that it is almost difficult to extricate yourself from the many tourists, as soon as you move towards the outskirts of the historic center you can no longer find anything. However, it remains a beautiful village that is absolutely worth seeing for anyone in the Gargano area.

The village of Monte Sant'Angelo is very characteristic, you can walk around there are a few steps, the very characteristic Junno neighborhood is also very beautiful, all white, the cave of San Michele is beautiful and mystical, next to the basilica there are activities that they sell bread and typical local products.

Siamo arrivati in paese provenendo da Vieste e dopo avere attraversato la Foresta Umbra.
Il borgo si trova a ca. 800 m. d'altitudine: abbiamo parcheggiato in un punto più elevato rispetto al centro storico e da lì abbiamo iniziato la visita: il primo obiettivo era ovviamente la splendida Basilica di San Michele Arcangelo, con il Museo Lapidario e l'adiacente campanile, abbiamo poi continuato la strada in discesa, addentrandoci nelle strette viuzze del centro storico ed abbiamo poi finito la visita passeggiando lungo la strada, su cui si aprono numerose attività commerciali, che conduce al belvedere sul Golfo di Manfredonia.
Non siamo entrati nel castello normanno, che ci ha però dato l'impressione di una certa incuria e degrado.
Abbiamo anche assaggiato quella che sembra essere una della principali specialità culinarie del paese: le ostie ripiene.
Borgo molto caratteristico: visita consigliata.

Schon die Strecke von der Ebene aus Mattinata hinauf, um Monte Sant’Angelo zu erreichen, ist faszinierend. Die Serpentinenstraße führt steil nach oben ins Innere des apulischen Gargano, auf bis knapp 800 Meter Höhe und bietet viele Ausblicke auf die schöne Mittelmeerlandschaft dieser Ecke Apuliens. Beeindruckend ist auch die Strecke nach Monte Sant’Angelo durch die Foresta Umbra. Die dichte Bewaldung im Nationalpark Parco del Gargano bereitet durch ihre Stille bereits auf die mystische Stimmung vor, die an dem antiken Pilgermagnet herrscht.
In der Altstadt, von der aus man ein wunderschönes Panorama auf den Golf von Manfredonia und die Ebene von Mattinata hat, dreht sich alles um den heiligen Michael. Souvenirläden und Kunstläden, Märkte und Stände auf der Straße, aber auch Restaurants und Bars: Alles steht hier im Namen Michaels. Neben der Basilika des Michaels beeindruckt der knapp 30 Meter hohe Glockenturm, der seit Ende des 13. Jh. über die Stadt wacht. Steigt man ein paar Treppen nach unten stößt man auf zwei alten Kirchen (San Pietro und Santa Maria Maggiore). Sie überraschen im Inneren mit ihren bunten Fresken, ihrer großartigen Architektur und der sogenannten Tomba di Rotari, einem beeindruckenden Baptisterium aus der Antike.
Bei Sonne blendet das pure Weiß der Marmorplatten und der Hausfassaden. Steigt man weitere Treppen nach unten, kommt man in den Stadtteil Rione Juno. Malerische weiß verputzte Reihenhäuser aus den 16. und 17. Jahrhunderten blicken hier auf die darunter liegende Ebene. Steigt man die Treppen wieder hoch zur Burg „Castello Normanno“ kann man die mächtige Silhouette der ursprünglich langobardischen Verteidigungsanlage sehen.
Neben der Grotten-Kirche ist aber auch das Kastell sehenswert. Ein Durchschlendern durch die Gassen der Altstadt ist empfehlenswert. Wir parkten auf dem Parkplatz in der Nähe des Kastells.

One of the important pilgrimage site spanning on the mountain top. The old town is compact and small, it does not mean easy navigation apart from the castle, sanctuary di San Michele, or Tomba di Rotari. It is easy to get lost in the maze of narrow cobbled streets with many churches., though there are some signs for tourists circuit.The best view of the city is from the castle area. Late in the afternoon the hassle and bustle is gone when the tourists are gone. The the old city starts to be chilling-out.

The town centre of Monte Sant'Angelo is really squashed together, with a lot of white buildings and very narrow streets where one can easily lose one's way. The buildings are nice and quite well kept, but this part of the town seems somewhat deserted and unpopulated. Or maybe the inhabitants just want to make the tourists keep to the new part of the town, where there are many shops and bars and which is full of life.
