centro benessere fantastico.
Ritorneremo sicuramente!

‪Arrivati il 30/12/2019, e ripartiti 01/01/2020. Struttura e personale a dir poco meraviglioso.

‪We booked our 10 day stay at Villa Rizzo resort and Spa through secret escapes and visited in August 2019. My wife, Jess, had had a tough year and we were really looking forward to have 10 days away in the sun with our 2½ year old daughter. It was our first proper holiday together since she was born. We paid about £1000 for the ten days and were booked into a junior suite called Nocciola. We sorted out our flights and car hire separately (you’ll definitely need a car to get to and around the resort/hotel).

As we drove up the lovely drive our first impressions of the hotel were great, however that didn’t last. We went to reception and booked in with a rather surely looking lady. After some time we were shown our room, we were told dinner and breakfast would be served in the white house and then we were left to our own devices. The room itself was quite pleasant and felt nice and cool. Our daughter had a pulled out sofa-bed which we paid an extra 15 euros per night for her to use. We unpacked a few things and then went to look around. There was a party of friendly locals celebrating a baptism in the white house so we wander off to the pool. I had read in the room literature that there was a bar open all day by the pool so we went to get a drink. Unfortunately there was no one there. A member of staff from the kitchen told us it would open in around 3 hours. We had just had a 9 hour journey and were rather keen on relaxing and having a drink so I went and asked at reception about getting some refreshments. They told me to go to the white house where the party was. I wasn’t overly keen on walking through a party to find someone but Jess and our daughter wanted to sit by the pool with a drink and unwind. I found someone and asked for some drinks but was told to go to the pool bar, I explained there was no one there and they then took me to the bar and said it had rained that morning so they decided to close it. Eventually we were served. Not the best start after a very long day with a toddler. I subsequently realised that as part of our booking we should have had a complimentary welcome drink in any event, however we never received it, there were just two empty wine glasses in the room when we arrived. It was a sign of things to come.

We then unpacked the rest of our belongings and had a proper look at the room. It was very clean but it was in a poor state. The chest of drawers had a handle missing, as did the dressing table. One of the two chairs had a broken leg so you could not sit on it. These pieces are not antique, they are mid-20th century worth about 40 quid each in a second hand shop in the UK. The sink in the bathroom was not properly attached to the wall and caused a huge about of concern that my daughter may pull it away (onto her head) if she tried to use it to stand up. The lever for the plug in the sink did not work so there was no way of filling the sink up with water. We are all slim (ish) but the shower was small so every slight move you make means you knock into the side. The shower also had a problem keeping a constant temperature. The fridge was so noisy that you could not sleep at night with it on. The sofa bed was fine for my daughter as she was so small but I lay on it to read her a story and found it extremely uncomfortable. Likewise one side of the main bed was very uncomfortable, but it was not a proper double bed, it was two singles so we could turn one mattress over and that made it better. The table outside was an upcycled from an old wrought iron fence but looked horrendous with some old foam placed between the iron and the glass top. And why not have some cushions on the metal outside chairs? How anyone could possibly think the room and furniture was acceptable is beyond me. I would be thoroughly embarrassed if that was my spare room at home and had friends to stay. On a plus note the air conditioning did work well and the cleaner, Anna, cleaned the room very well every day.

The next day I spoke to reception about the problems in the room and was told that they would ask the cleaners to “validate” what I had said when they cleaned the room the following day. I said that someone could check now and that sink was a risk and the chair could not be used. I was simply told it was not a problem and everything would be looked at. We stayed for a further 9 days and nothing happened at all. I could have constantly had gone back and complained but I didn’t want to get anymore annoyed than I was and didn’t want my wife to get any more upset. I thought it best just to leave it and try to enjoy the rest of the holiday. In any event the failings in the room where obvious for any member of staff to see and report back to the management.

I noticed over the next few days that new guests were being shown around the resort. That did not happen with us and I can only assume that was because no-one really spoke English so they didn’t bother. It was a shame as we didn’t know that the dinner wasn’t in the white house every night until about the fourth evening when I saw dinner being served by the pool. Apparently it was only served in the white house on our first evening due to the rain. Had we know that then we probably would have stayed for dinner more often rather than going out for the first few evenings. We also didn’t know that there was a scenic walk around the hazelnut groves until about the 5th day. There was a sign but it was in Italian so we didn’t realise. The walk itself is really quite nice and some effort has been made by planting pomegranate plants along the path. The path goes through the hazelnut groves but also winds along the vineyard and olive groves. Clearly it was once extremely pretty but it is now let down by the dilapidated animal enclosures where there are ponies, geese and peacocks. There is also a very pretty little area where a stream runs across the path, unfortunately the stream is now congested with plastic bottles and bags. It would only take a couple of people 20 minutes to clean it all up but I doubt that will happen anytime soon. The “grounds” were looked after by one man who appeared to be very hard working, they could be really lovely if more time and money was spent. The grassed areas were not maintained and looked like they were wild. Why not put some grass seed down like many other hotels and restaurants do so there are nice lawns? And why not use some paint and plant the occasion flower?

The restaurant in the white house is a more formal setting than the pool restaurant but I don’t think they are ever open at the same time. The menu is limited but the food was tasty. The wine was very expensive with the cheapest bottle being 18 euros. The pool restaurant is over the spa and it was slightly distracting having the restaurant playing music while being drowned out by the whale music coming up from the spa. The pool restaurant is a very nice place to have dinner and I would recommend it.

Breakfast is served in the white house between 8 and 10. There is a good selection and fresh coffee is made as well as a selection of egg dishes (although we didn’t know about the eggs until about day 4 because no-one told us). On day 2 the orange juice did run out and after waiting 10 minutes I politely asked whether the jug could be refilled only to be told to “WAIT” by a very grumpy bespectacled lady (ironically I saw her wearing a T-shirt with “Happy” written on it one day!). In general breakfast was very enjoyable and it ran very well when a young bearded chap was working.

As part of our booking we also had a one hour spa session per person. My wife really enjoys going to spas so I said she could have both of the sessions and I would play with our daughter in the pool. Before Jess was an English teacher she was a qualified beautician who worked in spas as well as on board cruise ships. Sadly she was disappointed. She told me that there was no air-conditioning at all in the spa which meant there was a lot of mould which you could not only see but smell especially in the steam room where they didn’t use any essential oils. She did say the Jacuzzi was pleasant as were the staff in the spa. Jess cancelled the second session as she did not want to repeat the experience.

The resort/hotel also has a gym facility which I used, once. There was a decent running machine and an old cycling machine as well as an old multi-gym weights machine which didn’t work very well and probably wasn’t very safe. There were a couple of benches but the weights were only small 1kg and 2kg. The sound system was also faulty. However the main problem was that there was no air conditioning. It was 35 degrees and far too hot to do any serious exercise. I gave up and went for a run around the scenic route instead, which was much better running a few laps in the shaded groves.

The staff were generally pleasant enough although they couldn’t really speak any English. I appreciate that we were in Italy but they do work in hospitality and 20% of the earth’s population speak English. Veronica was nice and friendly but in whole the staff never went the “extra mile” and always seemed inconvenienced by any questions we may have. We stayed for 10 days and I would have thought someone may have asked us if we had a pleasant day or enquired what we had planned but nothing was ever said. Likewise we were never called by our names. We never felt welcomed.

The main selling point for Villa Rizzo is the pool and pool bar. The area is clean and quite lovely. Our daughter loved swimming in the clean clear water. Unusually it is salt water rather than chlorinated water but the salt is very mild and can hardly be noticed. For some reason they insist on everyone wearing swimming caps which are sold for 2 euros at the bar. I have never seen this before and assume it must be to do with cleanliness and not wanting hair clogging up the filtration system, however it is odd seeing large hairy men with beards putting on a swimming cap on their bald heads! After a few days I noticed there were some pool towels available by the bar which we used on a couple of occasions. I’m not sure whether they were only for the better rooms because no one told us about them. I was also surprised the bar staff didn’t ask anyone who was sat by the pool whether they would like to order any drinks, instead everyone need to go to the bar when they wanted something, it wasn’t as if they were busy most of the time. The pool was quite in the morning and evening when there was only residences using the facility but from 10.30 each day non-residences would arrive to use the pool. Sometimes there would only be about 10 people around the pool but other times there was about 40. It was not always the best place to “renew your body and soul” as stipulated in the welcome pack but I very much enjoyed our time by the pool and would say it is the best thing about Villa Rizzo.

The location is quite a good one. It’s an hour’s drive from Naples airport. It is about 45 minutes to Salerno to get the ferry to Amalfi and Positano. It takes about an hour to get to Paestum to see the beautiful Greek temples. There are a number of villages and towns within 15 minutes’ drive with nice restaurants and fully stocked supermarkets. If you have an electric car then there are hook ups at the hotel. This surprised me as so much of the hotel is run down or ignored I could not understand why they had done such a forward thinking move such as have electric chargers for guest’s cars, I can only assume that one of the owners has an electric car or this was a tax break because it would not have been done solely for the benefit of the customers.

We booked Villa Rizzo on the back of some very good reviews on the internet. I can only assume they are from people who only visited for a day or only stayed for a night or two. There are 85 reviews on TripAdvisor and 77 of them are from Italians so I guess most of those are probably non-residences who just used the lovely pool. We seemed to be the only ones who were there for any time and I would like to think that after 10 days at Villa Rizzo I would be in a good place to give an honest account. I have done many reviews and the vast majority are positive and it gives me no pleasure to write this review but it also made me extremely saddened to witness the constant disappointment on my wife’s face.

If Villa Rizzo ever had any glory days they are long since gone. It is now, at best, second rate. So much of it is neglected. Clearly some efforts have been made along the way like the pomegranates along the scenic walk but they pale into insignificances when considered alongside the poor resort facilities and indifferent staff. The owners must be blamed; either they know about all the problems and don’t care or they are oblivious to them which makes them compliance in the downfall of the resort. Anyone who walks around for 10 minutes with their eyes and ears open will clearly see what needs to be done but that hasn’t happened and I sadly suspect it won’t happen. Villa Rizzo needs someone who can see the clear and obvious problems it faces and the enthusiasm to change it, until then we will not be returning.‬
