The bridge crosses over the beautiful river Coquet and there are really superb walks along the river banks in both directions. The river itself is wonderful but so too are the views of the castle, the bridge and the church. This is a lovely small town to spend time exploring.

We saw this bridge as we drove over the road bridge into Warkworth, so had a little stroll to have a look whilst walking around.
I know it's just a bridge but it's great that places like this have preserved such an old bridge and look the archway onto the bridge.

The current road bridge was only opened in 1965 and prior to this the medieval Warkworth Bridge would have carried all the traffic over the River Coquet to and from the town. It is a wonder it survived and it is apparently one of only a few such structures left standing in England.
We had seen it as we entered town and following a visit to Warkworth Castle, at the opposite end of the main street, we walked back to it taking in the attractions of the town as we strolled. It’s a quaint looking village and the bridge does not look out of place. There is a pleasant river walkway with benches and picnic tables, and the nearby historic St Lawrence Church, dating back centuries is also open to visitors.
Nowadays the bridge is accessible to pedestrians only and it’s worth crossing over for a look and to walk through the gatehouse, imagining as you do, that you’re heading to the Castle back in the 14th century to visit the owners. As Scots, we would have been unlikely to get a warm welcome at that time in contrast to present day.

This really is a lovely , arched , 14th century sandstone bridge , in a beautiful leafy location over the river Coquet. It’s one of only two surviving fortified medieval bridges in Britain, has two ribbed segmental spans, and is just 11 feet wide and 61 metres long, with pedestrian refuges built above the triangular cutwaters. Once upon a time it was a main thoroughfare , but now is purely a pedestrian bridge, and a Scheduled Monument. The walk alongside the river from the bridge is very pleasing and peaceful .

Lovely walk along the river Coquet from Walkworth with views of the old bridge. Crossing the bridge we saw a couple of herons and plenty of other birds. A very simple but enjoyable part of our visit to Walkworth.

Lovely walk down by the river to the old bridge and is especially nice on a sunny day. The bridge is now pedestrianised and you get good river views from viewing points on the bridge. Best to walk here from the castle parking.

An historic 14th century stone, arched bridge over the River Coquet with a fortified gatehouse at one end,now closed to traffic that passes by over the newer 20th century bridge that runs alongside on the A1068.
Beautiful picturesque part of Warkworth nearest to its beach.

A beautiful location taken in as part of our day out in the autumn sunshine and lovely colours; enjoyed it all the more as the crowds have gone!

Parked up in this pretty little village, parking is free which apparently is not a good thing according to one of the locals I spoke to. On the opposite end of Warkworth to the castle is this footbridge with great views down to the River Coquet. We walked from here to the beach, 10/ 15 minutes if I recall.
