The layout of Warkworth castle and most of its fortifications are essentially the creation of Robert fitz Roger between 1199 and 1214 : gatehouse, Carrickfergus tower, postern gate and east curtain wall. The spur walls are also likely to date from this time and suggest that the present great tower replaced an earlier stone structure.
In 1328 Edward III granted Warkworth castle to Henry Percy, second Lord Percy.
Henry Percy, first earl of Northumberland (1341-1408) transformed Warkworth castle. He was the first great landowner in the north to acquire a noble title and he almost certainly celebrated this by building the great tower.
Henry Percy, fourth earl of Northumberland (1449-1489) erected a new hall range, entered through the Lion tower. On the left were the great hall and the formal withdrawing chambers. To the right lay the service rooms and the kitchen. The Little Stair tower served as a secondary porch. He also commissoned a new collegiate church but this project was abandoned unfinished after his murder in 1489.
In the sixteenth century the Percy's were deposessed for rebellion and the castle suffered lack of maintenance and pillaging by royal officers. The decay continued in the seventeenth and eighteenth century with lack of maintenance by lease takers and stone quarrying.
In the 1850s the great tower was restored by Anthony Salvin at the request of Algernon, fourth duke Percy.

Visitors can discover Warkworth castle with the help of an outstanding guidebook or audioguide.
The great tower has a highly original polygonal design with a central light shaft annex cistern. Its domestic and service chambers are connected by an ingenious system of wall stairs.
On its ground floor you'll find an array of store rooms as well as the office and bedroom of the accountant.
Next up you can retrace the steps of former noble guests : past the porter's lodge into the entrance hall, up the stairs into the lobby, followed by the great hall, the great chamber and the parlour while passing by the chapel. Finally you'll catch a glimpse of the earl's bedchamber.
The second floor of the great tower (including the nineteenth century duke's rooms), the watch tower and its platform are off limits.
The Lion tower and Little Stair tower are battered and mostly foundations remain of the new hall range of the fourth earl Percy. The guidebook contains reconstruction drawings helping you visualise the layout.
Little remains of the south range which once housed a parlour and a chapel with balcony.
No towers or walls can be scaled.

Warkworth is a great place to visit with kids, particularly during half term. It lends itself well to imaginative play, with space to explore, run & hide.
On the day we visited, there was a halloween trail and staff member Hilda was alternating between spooky storyteller and halloween games master. The story was good, but all the kids have talked about since, were the games. Truth or Scare, pass the halloween balloon, and a ghostly version of 'what's the time mr wolf', kept them thoroughly entertained for a good 30 minutes.
Dogs are welcome in the castle (on a lead) and there is a toilet block in the car park, which could do with some TLC.
Take a picnic, and plan on being there for longer than you expected.

A great castle experience. Informative and well placed signage. Probably the best audio guide I’ve ever had - it strikes a very good balance between history and culture. Easily managed and is included with your ticket. A reasonable entry price, especially if you do the booking online beforehand.

Arrived as it opened so it was very quiet.
Much of the castle is ruined but the Keep is more intact.
There were boards around telling you about the different rooms and these were good as they were written in the words of a castle resident.
An interesting castle and well worth a visit

It's great to be able to visit places that are Dog Friendly when on holiday. After all, they are part of the family, not just a dog!
Warkworth Castle was dog friendly which is great.
There is parking at the castle, but we had walked up from the town.
Staff were pleasant, and showed us how to use the talking guide.
Castle was lovely and well preserved. You could go into lots of different sections of the castle and see what it might have been like.

A lovely well preserved castle with good interpretation. Our doggy loved walking round too. Then a walk to the river crossing to the Hermitage. Our guide Mick was brilliant, he obviously really loves his job and showing people The Hermitage. It’s fascinating . Cheers Mick .

This is a great castle. Lots of it remain, so there is lots to see and it has a great history. Worth joining English Heritage for this alone!

Thouroughly enjoyed our visit to the castle. So interesting and informative. We should have taken advantage of the mobile handsets which gave a running commentary of the history through the ages.
Sadly no coffee shop so we went 100 yds away to the Warkworth cricket club where we experienced the most beautiful home cooked cakes which is open until the end of the cricket season. Delightful !

Lovely dog friendly castle with information boards, a summer hunt for the kids (and me) and an audio tour. Toilets on site and a small shop. Just down the road Amble is worth a walk around

It's an excellent historical site. There is plenty of parking and information about the site's history. The entrance is free for English Heritage members. We will be back with the kids soon.

Would it be suitable to visit with a baby (in baby carrier worn by adult)?
كُتب بتاريخ 29 سبتمبر 2023
I would say that you would have a good time. There are a few harder bits but if you take it slow... there were certainly some young children there when we went and think there was a baby in a papoose style carrier

Very confused about the pricing ? It says online- the adult child concession prices etc then it says underneath remember to bring your membership card memberships start from £48 so do you have to pay this on top of your entry fee ?

are dogs just allowed in the grounds?
كُتب بتاريخ 6 أبريل 2017
Yes they are welcome as long as they are on a lead. It's also on their website.

What is the cost to get into the castle?
كُتب بتاريخ 22 يوليو 2016
Adults are £5.80, children between 5-15 are £3.40, and a family (2+3) is £15.00. The Concession rate is just barely a concession at £5.20. If you have an English Heritage membership, entrance is free. I hope you enjoy it!
