We were there with a tour group and we only had a hour and a half in the park and thats not a lot of time to see everything. We saw the Arizona and the museum that goes with it but did not see the movie but I heard it was good. The only thing I did not like was you have to use an app to scedule a time for the Arizona. There were a lot of people very frustrated with it and when you get your time and you walk up to the entrance they put you in a line to wait. But it does go fast and they move people to the site very quickly.

Pearl Harbor was one of the sites I most wanted on my first trip to Hawaii. WWII history is my passion and I had recently read "At Dawn We Slept," the exhaustive account of the attack. The Arizona Memorial seemed THE "must do" site at Pearl Harbor. I was much less impressed and moved by my memorial experience than I had anticipated and am noting that here so others have expectations set correctly and are prepared.
One can and should buy tickets well in advance. At the time of writing one does so at recreation.gov. The fee is nominal. If one is planning a trip after advance tickets have sold out (as I was), one can try to book tickets when additional tickets are made available at 3pm (local time) the day before. Those tickets sell quickly. We were ready to order tickets at 3pm, we wanted AM tickets, but we only managed to get PM tickets.
When we got to Pearl Harbor a little after the park opened, I asked a ranger for help planning our day. I'm glad I did that. She noted that it was a bit windy that day, and the park often cancels the boat trips to the ArizonaMemorial in the afternoon on windy days. Sure enough, they did cancel all afternoon trips to the memorial that day. She advised us to go "stand by" for the tour to the memorial first thing that morning to avoid missing out. We went standby and did get a slot on one of the first boats. Later that day, I met a group of Pearl Harbor enthusiasts who had planned to spend the entire day at Pearl Harbor, from opening to closing. They also had PM tickets and had not gotten the helpful advice I got. They were very disappointed not to have been able to see the memorial when afternoon boats were all canceled. I felt badly for them. The whole ticket booking/standby experience can be a bit unclear and stressful - and I feel that part of the experience can take away from what should be a solemn/moving experience.
One only gets about 10 minutes on the memorial. The boat pulls up to it. You and the others on your boat are herded onto and along one side of the memorial. Another boatload of people stands along the other side of the memorial waiting to board the boat back. On the memorial one hurries along one side, seeing the parts of the USS Arizona that are above water, and into a room at the far end of the memorial where one hears a short presentation about the memorial. Then one is herded back along the other side for the boat trip back. The very large number of people crowded onto the memorial, the short time allocated, the need to keep moving...all that took also took away from the solemnity.
When one Google searches the memorial, one sees dramatic photos from overhead that show the entire top of the ship visible just below the water. However, when we were on the memorial, the water was not transparent and one could only see the few parts that were above the surface of the water. Perhaps there is better clarity on days with less wind; but I had expected more of the ship would be visible.
It feels unpatriotic to write an "average" review of a site that is sacrosanct. I don't intend this review to diminish the tragedy of lives sacrificed and the high importance of memorializing the event. My own expectations for how I would experience the memorial proved too high, and I hope this review helps you set yours more accurately.
I found listening to some of the quotes in the audio tour and reading about some of the personal stories much more moving than the memorial visit itself (with stressful/confusing ticket purchasing and a rushed, crowded, "herded" trip on the memorial).

This place is incredibly informative! My kids had an absolute blast and couldn't stop talking about it afterward. It's definitely a must-go for families looking for both fun and educational experiences.

Just being there brought tears to my eyes, the lives that were lost. The boat ride over the Arizona Memorial was beautiful to see.
I remember Elvis Presley was instrumental in donating the monies he received from his concert in 1959, to go toward the building of this Memoria.

This was my third time in 30 plus years to come visit the Arizona Memorial. Each time it is bigger and better than the time before. The museum with the artifacts, models, and films are great. It is very sobering when you look down into the water onto the deck of the USS Arizona. The audio tour was well worth the cost. It is well narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis. Enjoyable day learning about that terrible day in US history on December 7, 1941.

Very moving experience. See the movie before going to the memorial. Be sure to get memorial tickets ahead of time. You can not get them otherwise. There are also other displays with movies to watch. The shuttle to Ford Island was efficient. We went to the USS Missouri. Our tour guide Lindsey was great. We did not have enough time to go to the Aviation Museum.

This is truly a humbling and somber trip to the National Memorial in Pearl Harbor. You get to appreciate the sacrifices and heroism displayed that fateful day and take time to reflect internally that freedom is not free. Definitely take the opportunity to visit. We did the standby early in the day to avoid congested commute times.

No need to purchase ahead of time. This does not include timed access to USS Arizona (the ONLY way to purchase tickets is through the Park service).
You can go to USS Arizona without a timed ticket. You can wait in the standby to take the boat out-line gets long quickly.
If your traveling with luggage can check for a fee (all purses have to be checked-so if you can leave them in the car).
The self guided audio tour was very informative and the VR experience was very cool too-this was included in this ticket. However, you can just pay day of going.
Unless you want a timed ticket to view the USS Arizona, buying tickets in advance is not necessary.
Beautifully done museum. Glad we went. The living history interviews of WW2 vets and civilians were best part.

I plan to be there in middle of September. We are staying on Kalakaua Avenue. I want to buy tickets on the rec.gov website.
Do I take a cab to Arizona Memorial Plaza and is this where
I get the trip out to the Memorial? Thanks

Thank you for your service!
Purchasing tickets online you will pay a "convenience fee" as the tickets themselves are free. We used lyft while in the island and had a great experience - cheaper too!
The park is very accessible to everyone and easy to navigate. I recommend seeing the exhibits first before the boat ride to the memorial. Incredibly moving and emotional experience. I hope you find it as amazing as we did!

Can i carry a clear crossbody purse into the Arrizona Memorial? The bag is approved for entry to the NFL football games.

Yes, you can. It must be completely clear plastic. There were several women in our small tour group that had something similar to a clear plastic "toiletry kit" bag for their wallet, phone, etc.

The website says the memorial boat tour is closed indefinitely. Does anyone know why and how long it's been this way? We are visiting in January. So disappointed to hear this.

The website show that the boats are not running to the actual memorial. The park is open, the museums are open but you will not be able visit the USS Arizona. The website does not state why the boats aren't running. I suggest that you call. Here is the number 808 422-3399.

I checked the Pearl Harbor (nps.gov) website and it appears things continue to be open. I would note that if you get tickets at the Memorial site, they are frequently less expensive than getting them through other venues. You can also buy "packages" at the site as well since there are other things to see (e.g. USS Missouri, a submarine, etc.)

First time poster here! We are going to visit the USS Arizona Memorial when we visit Hawaii in June (hopefully!) and I am planning on purchasing the free ($1.00) advance tickets today. We are undecided about the audio tour right now. Can you add on the audio tour when you get there or do you have to purchase it when you purchase your advance ticket? Thanks for your help!

Hi,
Can you please advise which is the best tour to take to see Pearl Harbour we are a family of five with three boys aged 11, 14 and 16. We are really interested in history and also would like to see the memorial park nearby if possible? Thank you, on advance, Melinda :)

When is the earliest time I can get there and still get a walk up ticket for the ferry to the memorial?

If you go to this Park site, the Pearl Harbor National Parks site.
It give you all the information you may need. They suggest arrive at 7:00 am to get the free tickets.. They give out about 1300 a day. This is a first come, first served.
As of today, June 26, 2019 they shoe that the Memorial is still closed for repairs. But the rest of the Pearl harbor Park is open.
