If you haven't seen the 1938 motion picture "Boys Town" starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney, you must not own a television set. It put a spotlight on the work of Father Edward J. Flanagan, an Irish priest who established his Home for Boys in 1917 to care, treat and educate homeless and at-risk children. In 1921, he purchased Overlook Farm on the outskirts of Omaha, Nebraska, and moved his boys' home there. In time, it became known as the Village of Boys Town, which became home to hundreds of boys and grew to include a school, dormitories, administration buildings. Father Flanagan's work, which he called "God's work," continued after his death in 1948 as the population doubled and the complex expanded to include expanded educational, vocational, athletic and arts opportunities for its residents. My wife and I, who are annual donors to Boys Town, were anxious to see Boys Town as it is today. Start at the visitor center and have lunch at the Overlook Cafe. We recommend the 1/2-pound patty melt with mushrooms, grilled onions and bleu cheese and the 1/2-pound specialty burger with BBQ, bacon and cheese. With a basket of fries. Or maybe you'd prefer the soup and salad bar. If you arrive early, try the two-egg Denver omelet with hash browns, ham, peppers, onions and cheese. Take a guided or self-guided tour, learn the history of Boys Town at the Hall of History, visit the Dowd and Chambers chapels, the Garden of the Bible, Father Flanagan's house and tomb and the gift shop.

It is truly a real town/community. We spent over 4 hours on campus visiting the visitor center, church, hall of history, and Father Flanagan’s house. And of course spent some money in the gift shop. Very heart warming story

After we drove around the huge complex, we decided to stop at the Visitor's Center. I am so glad I did. Not only were we given a map to help us understand what buildings were what, but to talk with a docent and ask my many questions. Then again we drove around following the map and understanding what we were seeing now. The History Center is a must to understand how and why Boys Town started up to and including the need for this type of intervention today. I was surprised at how much medical research is done today at this location.

I enjoyed a brief visit at Gardens of the Bible. The campus has many beautiful areas. My favorite is the florals, water features and statues of the Gardens of the Bible.

One of the most beautiful areas to visit in the fall. The colors are amazing. You can start at the Visitor center and take a tour of this scenic campus. The landscape and architecture of the buildings is beautiful and full of character.

Before we came, I had my kids watch the Spencer Tracy/Mickey Rooney classic which I recommend it anyone. I think it makes you appreciate it a little more.
First off, the people volunteering or working throughout the public buildings are so nice and informative.
Secondly, there is tons to see in the buildings. I thought we'd see a museum and be done. Nope. We visited Father Flanagan's house (where the movie was filmed), the museum, and the church. There's also some outdoor gardens and walking paths if the weather is nice (it wasn't when we were there!).
I assumed that BoysTown was mostly for midwest children. I didn't realize that Father Flanagan also visited Ireland, Japan, and Germany so they could begin improving their programs for orphans after World War II. Truly a man who improved the lives of millions.

Your visit starts at the visitor center where you are greeted by friendly staff. Tickets are appropriately priced. You can visit the hall of history, the bible gardens and Fr. Flanagan's home. The hall of history is a fairly lengthy guided tour by a knowledgeable docent. Our schedule did not allow it, but we could have returned and spent an additional 2-3 hours looking at displays in depth. It provides a great view of the history of the time - you know what you are seeing were the conditions in any city. Fr. Flanagan's home is appointed with original artifacts. Don't miss the beautiful church and the chapel burial spot.

My friend and I went to Boys Town today and visited the history museum there. I am extremely impressed by this organization and their mission of helping children. The history of Boys Town was wonderful and well laid out. I would recommend this to any visitors coming to Omaha!

You get to tour the Boys Town Museum, the Catholic church and gardens as well as Father Flanagan's home. Everything is well maintained and it is interesting to see how it still operates today.

Are there volunteer opportunities?

I'm not sure but would imagine so. This is a small town with it's own zip code. Fire department, health care, police department and suicide prevention call center. I would contact them and let them know your desire to volunteer.

Is there an admission fee to see the Bible Garden and chapel?

No. The Bible gardens are outside without charge. The admissions charge is small any way and goes to help a good cause. You will get a map of the complex with several things to explore. Make the donation.

The campus is strictly for the kids. There is a visitor center and you can tour the entire square mile of facilities. There is no hotel on site. I recall there is a hotel within a half mile off Dodge st.
I used to have a statue of the boy holding his younger brother, but somewhere along the way it got lost and I was wanting to find another one. Does anyone know where to find one at or if they are for sale yet? I received it for collecting money for the boys town club while in cub scouts in the late 60's. It has taught me to always help others first.

The gift shop definitely has "He Ain't Heavy, Father. He's my brother" items available. Go to their website (Boys Town Gift Shop) and you will find items you can order online.
The story of the "He Ain't Heavy" statue is very interesting.
According to the Boys Town blog, a boy with polio was abandoned by his mother in 1918 and ended up at Father Flanagan’s Home for Boys, which had just opened a year earlier. Howard had difficulty walking and wore heavy leg braces. Stairs were especially hard to maneuver. Several of the Home’s older boys carried the boy up and down the stairs.
One day, Father Flanagan asked one of those older boys, if carrying the boy was hard.
The older boy replied, “He ain’t heavy, Father… he’s m’ brother."
Then, in 1943, Father Flanagan was looking through a copy of Ideal magazine when he saw an image of an older boy carrying a younger boy on his back. The caption read, “He ain’t heavy, mister… he’s my brother.”
Immediately, the priest was reminded of a photo taken at a Boys Town picnic many years before of the boy with polio being carried. Father Flanagan wrote to the magazine and requested permission to use the image and quote. The magazine agreed and the image became synonymous with Boys Town.
