It's hard to get there without one's own boat. But it's a magical place with unspoiled nature and fascinating history

For a time this historical island hosted the oldest ongoing English-speaking settlement in America. Now part of it is available for visiting and hiking every summer while some of it is a bird preserve for most of the summer. There are history and nature guides that are very useful to help you get the most out of your visit. The trails are good but rustic and watch out for poison ivy (although I believe that the caretakers work to keep it under control). A unique experience. The ocean views are unbeatable.

This was our first visit since the Nature Conservancy handed the island to the Boothbay Region Land Trust. No drastic changes, but the granite wharf has been improved, the museum has more information and the trail guides are wonderful. The small anchorage was less crowded than during our previous stops there. The fortunate children who summer there in the Life Saving Station were delightful. I would like to spend 2 nights there on a future visit so that I could explore more. Would love to be there when the north point is open to see the eiders in August.

This island had European settlers that predate Plymouth plantation. Fascinating history on this island capturing the essence of 17th and 18th century America. Check out the tiny museum, hike to the lookout tower hill, cross over to the west-side of the island. This island has great trails and an intriguing story to tell. We took our own boat, tied to an available mooring, and rowed to dock. Watch out for fire ants at the head of the trail - just keep moving.

Visited by private boat I'm not sure how one visits any other way. But if you can get there it is a magical place. It had a large thriving fishing community as early as the 1600s. Now deserted except for one private house and a caretakers cottage. There are several beautiful walking trails and a very small museum. To sore site this islan you need to understand its history and see pictures of the TINY harbor packed with fishing schooners and square rigger red ships

Very typical little Maine town, nice shops and great restaurants. Drive the Island and see some of the greatest shoreline views, lighthouses and antiques.

A tiny little island off the coast of Boothbay Harbor. The protected horseshoe harbor has courtesy tenders and moorings. There is and old Coast Guard lifesaving station and small museum. This is one of the oldest settlements of the new world, Well worth the trip to walk around the trails on a nice sunny summer day.

Not only is it one of the most gorgeous places I have ever been to....my family roots run deep there. My grandfather was raised on the island many moons ago. It's historic and breathtaking.

Sorry, you cannot reach Damariscove by car. It is only accessible by boat. The Boothbay Region Land Trust hosts occassional excursions to explore the island — usually with informative naturalists as docents. You could probably arrange to visit by a private charter. Some of the reviews seem to have Damariscove confused with other islands in the area. If you are visiting by your own vessel, use your chart carefully for entering the small harbor from the south. Ledges are close by — particularly along the east side of the channel. The “harbor” is “very snug”. You might be lucky to pick up an empty mooring. If anchoring, mind your swing. Might better ask to raft up. Only short stays at the stone wharf.
