‪We've done nearly all the hikes around Telluride and this may be the gem of them all.

The Sneffels Highlight Trail is a long-ish 15+ mile loop on the north side of Telluride. It starts and ends at the Jud Weibe trailhead, climbs up over a pass at over 12,000 feet and takes you through thick pine and aspen forests, wide-open alpine meadows, past crashing waterfalls and gurgling streams, up steep grades and along flat traverses. Most of all, this trail has scenery. Bring your camera and plan on being awestruck. You'll get great views of Telluride and the ski resort from way up high.

If you're a trail runner and are feeling fit, the entire trail is runnable though a couple of sections are steep enough you'll be hiking. To run the trail, go clockwise as this makes the ascent more gradual. To hike it, consider counter-clockwise and get the climbing out of the way so you can have an easier stroll for most of the hike.

This is a long hike so be prepared. Bring a lunch and plan to stop for a while and enjoy the break. Bring extra nutrition, too, in case this takes longer than you expect. We did this hike in about six hours hiking without hurrying and we took a break for lunch. We could see it taking much longer if the weather didn't cooperate or if someone got sick or injured. We didn't see many people--probably half a dozen the entire day, a Sunday in August.

We were spent but happy when we got back. We sat down in the San Miguel river in town and (somewhat painfully) chilled our legs; we recovered quickly and were good to go the next day.‬

‪The Sneffels Traverse is a hut to hut trip from LAst Dollar Pass to Ouray. 29.4 miles. It offers spectacular views, amazing wildflowers and lovely aspen. Can rent the huts from San Juan Huts‬

‪If from out of town, I would recommend doing a warm-up hike the day prior to get used to the higher elevation. Keep in mind the trailhead begins a 1/2 mile beyond the top of the Jud Wiebe trail - so you MUST complete that trail first. For reference, I am a 30-year-old male - 150 lbs., that lifts weights 0-2 times per week. I got mild altitude sickness on this hike so it took 12 hours for me to complete (from the base of the Jud Wiebe trail), though I'm sure that if you have any cardio experience it could be completed in as few as 8 hours. A challenging journey with a great view.‬

‪Although it is a lengthy hike ( more than a15 mile loop from town), it is truly spectacular. We saw a herd of elk, the most amazing wildflowers, unbelievable vistas, and friendly fellow hikers. Start early in the day and pace yourself for this great outdoor experience ‬

‪Steep climb into beautiful alpine meadows. Followed by a very steep switchback over boulder field and over the pass down into another beautiful alpine meadow. You must be in good shape. Some treacherous steps and some danger of falling boulders on the boulder field if people are hiking behind you.‬

‪This hike is by far, one of the best hikes in Telluride. This hike is also one of the longest. We were prepared to hike 13 miles but it ended up being 20 miles total after realizing the book didn't account for the other connecting trails. Start off by hiking Jud Wiebe at Aspen St., then connect to Sneffels Highline, Waterline, Mill Creek, Deep Creek Trail and back to Jud Wiebe. The views are spectacular! We walked through a field of shoulder high wildflowers for about 5-10 minutes (probably took longer as we kept taking multiple pictures). Never experienced that before and can't wait to hike it again next summer! Multiple creek crossings and waterfalls around every turn. You won't be disappointed!‬

‪I did the Sneffels Highline Trail in mid July and agree with most of what the other reviewers have said here, but I have a few different or additional thoughts. As a note, I did this hike counter-clockwise with 2.75 hours up to the saddle and 2.5 down (with a few quick breaks, including lunch).

Without a doubt, this is a beautiful hike. It probably would have been even more beautiful a few weeks later because some of the wildflowers in the basin were not yet in full bloom. All that said, the fields were still full of many different varieties of flowers. There were also views of the typical CO basins, mountains, saddles, cirques, etc. Is it my favorite hike in CO, or even in the area? Definitely not. The majority of the hike is above Telluride or coming down into Telluride, so this hike doesn't give the same sense of remoteness as other areas. The ski lifts and gondola are in view for a good portion of it. I also followed mountain bike tracks the entire length of the trail and actually got startled by a biker with a dog on the descent. They're not supposed to be on the more remote sections of the trail, but there you have it. Again, if you're staying in town or don't spend a lot of time backcountry, this will be a fantastic option (as the other reviewers have mentioned here). I'll just say that Blue Lakes and the pass, Ice Lakes, and Wetterhorn Basin are higher on my favorites list than Sneffles Highline.

I shaved time off the recommended 7.5 - 8 hours for this hike, and while I spend a fair amount of time in the mountains, I live at sea level. The key is to keep a very slow and steady pace on the ascent. Like you want to go so slowly that you actually feel like it's driving you crazy to go that slowly! This will help keep your heart rate and breath steady, and it's a secret to climbing big mountains. You can also look up mountaineering rest step for tips on how to give your legs a break if you get tired while climbing.

Someone makes a recommendation about water and other things to carry, and I would just point out that hiking at altitude generally means that you need to drink a lot more fluids than you typically would at sea level. You're going to be out there for at least a half day, so I would double your normal amount if you're pretty familiar with your hydration needs or take at least 2 liters of water per person. In the scheme of things, water weighs very little but can be critical to acclimatization. You could also carry a water filter.

There are a few intersections so I would do a search for more detailed directions on the hike. I tried to include a link here but it got rejected, so just do a quick search and you'll be good to go.

Thunderstorms are no joke, so make sure you check out the forecast and always get an early start. And pack rain gear. It was dry in town but raining for a good portion of my hike.

I believe some people hike up to the saddle and back down again, which is a good option of you want a shorter hike, but I honestly wouldn't do the hike if it didn't include the trek out the Mill Creek Basin. That section really adds a lot to the hike.

Finally, I saw a herd of elk in the Mill Creek Basin, so keep an eye out. Fantastic!

Happy trails.‬

‪By choosing to take this hike, you are obviously fit and enjoy high alpine hiking. It's a good 5 hour loop, steep to the top, more gentle and a longer distance down. No reason not to go. Go early in the morning during the summer, when monsoon moisture is regular, and you want to be out of the highest area if a storm rolls in.‬

‪We like to go in spring and fall, because the aspens put on a world class color show both seasons. This is a fairly strenuous hike for low land visitors, but well worth trying anyway. It goes far up into the western San Juan's into some splendid high country. Most people seem to turn around at the saddle, but eh wildflowers and views make doing the whole loop very gratifying. Prepare to have your socks knocked off (bring and extra pair) by the autumn colors: a sea of gold! Be sure to take at least a liter of water per person, and extra layers, because the wind can blow stronger up there and it can rain in summer afternoons. The lightning danger isn't so high on this hike, like it is in some other high trans, because of all the peaks that surround it.‬
