This museum is amazing even if no one is there to share with you. The exhibits are well marked, interesting to see and very informative. The rail cars and locomotives are in such beautiful shape. You could get a feel for what it was like to be in the sleeper car, or the mail car or even the box car that moves produce. The model train collection is extensive beyond description.
The true treasure is in their staff and volunteer staff. The docents are personable and have knowledge way beyond a script. The working personnel also have much knowledge and freely share it. Plan for the large portion of the day to give it justice. We, my husband, grandson and I, spent almost 2 full days there. Even though we live in Colorado we chose to get a membership. These kinds of museums must be supported.

This is an excellent museum even if you are not into railroading. There is a lot of history here and the hands on exhibits are worth the price of admission alone. This place is a lot bigger that what you expect by looking at the outside. Well worth a trip to go there!

This is a fantastic museum!! It’s well laid out, has tons of information, really too much to comprehend in one day. It’s very large. When we arrived at opening time, my heart sank to see 3 bus loads of elementary students there. But this place is so big it wasn’t crowded at all even with all those kids. It is a very comprehensive collection, from antique engines to toy and model trains. There were some great model layouts and a good junior ranger program to keep the kids interested. My favorite exhibit was the examples of the china place settings from the various trains. I’d love to go back to catch what I missed the first time.

Almost all the many reviews for the museum are postive, and I'n certainly not going to dissent. The exhibits, the tour guide, and those fabulous, beautiful trains...all of them are great. So go.
But while I hate to inject even a whiff of politics into a travel board, it's important that museums get some pushback in their drive to make their institutions more diverse and inclusive. I agree that women and minorities have often been ignored in traditional accounts, and redress was necessary. But now museum staff are going overboard to the point they are distorting history. As I walked through, I could almost sense the museum's managers saying, "OK, we've talked a lot about the Big Four and they were all white men., So let's make a lot of the other exhibits about women and minorities."
But history isn't an EEO employer. Certainly the role of the Chinese in building the railroad deserves prominent attention. Certainly the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters should be discussed. But there's an enormous, rich history of railroads and the labor movement that gets ignored. Maybe I just missed it, but I don't recall seeing anything on Eugene Debs, despite his enormous role not only in railway union history but US political history as well. Meanwhile, often the biographies featured of those other than white men would seem to be, while commendatory, not of particular extinction.
Anyway, just my hobby horse. Despite the criticism, the museum was a pleasure.

Loved it! So many locomotives and stories and wonderful docents. It was so much fun. I loved everything about this museum. There is a kids area for them to play, so this museum is for anyone at any age. It’s located in a historical area of town, so after touring the museum, you can go for a walk, grab dinner and check out the souvenir shops. Fun!

We became “One Nation” coast-to-coast only with the completion of the transcontinental railway, a singular achievement. It’s a story of competition between railroads, it’s a story of immigration of laborers, it’s a story of stunning engineering achievement, it’s an inspired story of a great nation hitting its stride. Touring the museum is an exceptional opportunity to go back in time to experience and appreciate a great accomplishment in our national history. The impact of driving in the Golden Spike was to connect east to west and establish a vast transcontinental nation.

This is a very interesting museum, even if you are not a train fanatic. Plenty of interesting history and on-site explanations by the staff. 3rd floor has a whole section on toy trains. There is also an extensive collection of train tickets from different periods.

At the entrance of the museum, there is a very large steam locomotive, is that a big boy?
(if so why is it not acknowledge as 1 of the 8 big boys in existence in the U.S.)

Logjamb's answer is correct. The SP 4294 is a similar, large articulated engine, but cab-forward and one of a separate class built for Southern Pacific. It is, according to the museum, the only surviving example of this specific engine class.

About how long does it typically take to walk through the museum? How many hours do people budget for this excursion? Thanks!

I walked through it with my 5 year old grandson. He went through parts of it twice. We also watched the short movie and shopped in the gift store. It took about 2 hours, but you might not love it as much as we did! But, you might.

Is there a train from the museum that will take you to San Franscisco and back for the day?

No, this museum is not a working railroad. However, the Amtrak to the bay is located about 1/2 mile from the Museum...and that will get you to/from SF in one day. Uber/Lyft from museum to Amtrak is only $7!

If you don't mind walking. You can park at Mall parking for Macy's and walk under the pass and get free parking. Don't forget to validate at Macy's.
