Probably the most beautiful hotel that I’ve ever seen. It is also absolutely huge. You don’t feel like your in California during the tour, you feel like you’re in Europe.

My husband and I really enjoyed this tour. Such a unique location and just an hour from where we live. Would highly recommend.

The docent provided an excellent tour of the Inn. It was very informative. At 75 minutes, the length was perfect for us. She was very open to questions.

We Loved the tour! the Dosen was very knowledgeable and had a passion for the Mission Inn. Our group was lucky in being able to see all of the rooms/spaces since none were being rented at the time.
The history was interesting, very ornate, and the most important part to me was that the family who built it weren't a bunch of wealthy jerks! they were actually very decent human beings which made me love the place even more. I made a donation at the end because I wanted to help support what they do and to keep the tours going. I would HIGHLY recommend you take the tour! and at only $20 per adult, it was honestly well worth it.

The Mission Inn Museum is run by the Mission Inn Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1976 to help restore and preserve the then decrepit Mission Inn. It is a separate entity from the hotel itself, which has been owned since 1992 by Duane and Kelly Roberts. The hotel first opened in 1876 as the Glenwood Hotel by Christopher Columbus Miller, but it was his son Frank Miller who greatly expanded the hotel, then called the Glenwood Mission Inn, which eventually added 3 wings between 1903 and 1931, all done by different architects, contributing to the many different styles of the hotel, all under the Mission Revival umbrella.
The docent-led tours are an essential way to learn about the Inn's history, plus provide access to parts of the hotel not always open to the public. I was fortunate to tour on a day when no events were planned, so we were able to see rooms sometimes closed for weddings and private events/parties/meetings/banquets, etc. The one caveat for tours is that photos are not allowed. However, since I was staying at the hotel, I did see at least one tour later on where the docent had a blind eye to photo-taking. Also, it seems all docents are accompanied by another docent on the tour who is the key-holder and runs ahead or stays behind to open/close/lock rooms as they are entered and exited.
The rooms were saw that are sometimes inaccessible/locked were the Grand Parisian Ballroom, the Spanish Art Gallery, the Galleria, Ho-O-Kan and the Oriental Courtyard, St. Cecelia Chapel and St. Francis of Assisi Chapel. The Inn is a warren of corridors, stairways and levels, so it is very easy to get confused as to your whereabouts. We also saw the entrance to the "hotel room where macaws Napoleon and Josephine stay when not in their cage at the Inn's entrance.
Overall an essential experience to learn about this fascinating Inn. I would consider taking more than one tour, since docents have such a wealth of knowledge and facts that tours surely are not exactly the same.

We took the guided tour that allows you to see areas not viewable otherwise. We went midweek in warly June. There were very few events taking place allowing us to see many rooms. Worth the admission fee. Our docent was Catherine who did an excellent job. We were able to hear her well. You can wander a bit before or after tour to view at a more leisurely pace.

The Mission Inn has a fascinating and unexpected history. The tour was very informative and interesting. My only wish is that it had been a little longer.

Beautiful artwork and fantastic look into the past. I enjoyed and highly recommend. Frank Miller had a beautiful collection of art from around the world.

When I booked my room at the hotel, I didn’t realize that there was a separate Mission Inn Museum on the corner that gave tours (4 times a day). After dinner we walked past the corner of Mission Inn and Main, saw the Museum/Gift Shop where the tour starts and signed up online for a tour for the next day. Even if you don’t take the tour, in the museum you can see some artifacts and read the displays. Our guide was animated, funny, and very knowledgeable holding our interest for the whole 75 minutes. If you enjoy history and architecture, this tour takes you into locked chapels, the ballroom, and other spaces you couldn’t see otherwise. The Inn’s original owner was an eclectic collector who was in the right place at the right time—the St. Francis Chapel 18-karat gold leaf Raya’s Altar and Tiffany stained-glass windows are amazing. It is an excellent way to see more of the hotel than you would by staying there.

What a fascinating history to this hotel. The tour is 75 minutes and highlights key timelines and the facts about some of the spectacular art within the Inn.

Do they charge to enter ? If so how much ?

Hi Victoria,
We do not charge admission for the Museum. If you enjoy your visit, we would appreciate a $2 donation. To take a tour, it is $13 for guests 12 years old and over, free for children 11 years old and under. During the Festival of Lights (November 23, 2018-January 6, 2019), tours are $17 for adults and one child free per paying adult. We recommend making reservations in advance as the holiday tours are popular and fill early! We open reservations on September 1 for the Festival of Lights. Hope that answers your question!
Is it wheelchair and disabled friendly?
Donna G
ريفرسايد, كاليفورنيا58 مساهمة
As indicated by other responders, the hotel is ADA compliant and is wheelchair accessible. You should remember that this hotel was built long before all current requirements so the path you may have to take may be the "less traveled by." Also the elevator cars are small so if you have a large party with you, you will not all be able to fit into the cars. Allow extra time if your there during a busy season as the usage may impact how long you have to wait. All this may sound challenging, but I believe your stay at the historic hotel will be worth it.
Do you provide refrigerators and hair dryers in the rooms?

I've seen every room in the entire place. Some rooms have a built in microwave and 'frig. They will graciously supply you with a small refrigerator if your room does not already have one if you ask ahead. I believe there is a hairdryer in every room. They are all about service at Mission Inn.
