DO NOT TRUST GPS MAP. First choice took us to an AirBnB. You need to drive about 20 mins outside of Sedona. Great place ! You can get closer to cliff dwellings here than most places. Good accessiblilty but there is climbing involved. Spectacular views! Inexpensive tours about $2.00 per person and parking. Honeki is nearby also good.

Palatki Ruins consist of cliff dwelling ruins and ancient pictographs. Due to the delicate nature, you must make a reservation to tour both, but it is well worth it. The ruins are unrestored but still have some of the original wooden wooden door frames in place. The docent will tell you the latest theories on their inhabitants and practices on your tour. But the best part is the pictographs as they span over 1,000 years and many different cultures. Native history and development is on display on the walls that were used for ritual purposes. Note the drive in is gravel and many have some ruts and washboard. There are pit toilets at the parking area and a small museum.

The site is small but the guides are well-informed and the dirt road is fun to drive. Yes, you can make it with a sedan but 4WD is better. I can see how this might get hot in the summer but in the winter, it was fine. Took two teenagers and the visit was succinct enough that they remained engaged.

Be sure to reserve a time. Road is 7 miles of washboard, but sososo worth the drive. The tour is in 2 parts, first is cliff dwellings and second is petroglyphs. The rangers were knowledgeable, and liked to chat.

The guides were friendly and informative. The petroglyphs were well preserved, and the trail was fairly easy. There is a limited amount of people on each tour so one had to sign up in advance which worked well. There is a long unpaved road to access, but it is worth the slow ride.

We stopped here for a break on our ATV tour, it was a nice short walk to the ruins, and featured some awesome petroglyphs / cave drawings

The history of the USA is always a difficult area of study. The guides (Ed, Jim and Bob) at this site take visitors through many centuries of history. They bring the pictographs and petroglyphs right into the mind of the visitor. Added to the drawings, the physical walls and other cliff 'dwellings' this site has an almost magical feeling.
Beware, the car park and small visitor centre are quite a drive down a long and winding, bumpy track.

Great experience off the beaten path. Knowledgeable ranger/volunteers. Rough road to get there, could use a few hiking trails around the place.

Absolutely fascinating. I've been coming to Sedona, but never knew the history. This is the real thing. You can feel the ancient cultures and their lifestyle all around you. Beware the bumpy dirt road driving in so give yourself plenty of time

Kinda what was expected. Ruins, some very old, but few petroglyphs. Docents/guides were well informed, but not a lot to work with here.

How long does the tour last?

You climb up two trails to see two different areas. A lot depends on if the people climbing (easy, with large rocks as steps) go slower or not. Also depends on how many details the guide shares, and the Q & A time afterwards. Between about 40-50 minutes I’d say. But the slow drive out takes the most time, and has spectacular views. Allow 4 hours altogether!

Is this open now? When I call to make a reservation, says it is closed due to pandemic-even though the website does not state that.

I would call the chamber of commerce in Sedona but if their number says it's closed it's probably closed

There is a photo in this review of a young man showing his collection of Native American artifacts - pottery sherds, corn cobs, etc. It is ILLEGAL to take these items from Palatki! Aren't visitors made aware of these rules?

Yes it is definitely illegal to remove any type of artifact from a historical site. At Palatki the docents have a silver case that holds various artifacts for use during their presentation. Maybe this is what the photo is of.
Is there much walking involved in the tour

I would not say a lot. I’m not very active, but I made the two short climbing trails without much difficulty. Each trail about 1/4 mile up and back. We - and they - highly recommend use of hiking poles or sticks.

It looks like directions say to take that Forest Service Road 525 from SR 89A to get there, but I've been on that road for about 3 miles and it's terrible. I've also seen directions to Palatki when I was at the Fay Canyon trailhead off of Dry Creek Road from Sedona. But I've never been farther than that, so has anybody been there that way? (I called for reservations but had to leave a message and I will ask them when I hear back - just thought I'd ask if anybody has gone that way.)

Yes, you can reach Palatki from Dry Creek Road/Fay Canyon. A little less dirt road but still about 5 miles of dirt road. Signage on that way is better. It is also more scenic that wat.
Can handicapped people take the tour of the ruins

Depends on the mobility issue, wheelchairs and walkers would be difficult due to terrain, with the proper companion other challenges could be met. i would discuss the challenge with the Pink Jeep Tour Company, largest in the area and very knowledgeable.

How do you become a docente volunteer for the Palatki Ruins?

I asked while I was there. You need to go through the national park service.

Be sure to call ahead. They got a little testy with me when we showed up after calling three times with no one answering. It was a very memorable learning experience, highly recommend it! The tour guides are so informative and friendly.
