Concept is great. Loved the idea of hiking to the cave, repelling down and exploring another cave. Sadly our guides were terrible. They did not speak English except a few words. They did not educate us on anything about the plants, animals, history ect. and that was something we wanted to learn about. It was pretty much silent the whole time. You would think they would have one of the guides down at the river bed taking photos or videos when you do the repelling as an awesome memory but nope. It was over $230 for us to do this excursion which isn’t cheap imo and it was overall disappointing. Felt very rushed. If you aren’t dead set to do the repelling I would recommend another company or local guide to go exploring with. We saw many others and they seemed to be having a much better time. Another couple at our Air BnB complex went there for a tour and paid $20 for two people and for a half day (no repelling) but said it was fantastic and told us all the learned about the area, plants, history ect.

We had a great experience on the Mukaro Cave Tour with Tanama River Adventures. Helmets and life jackets were provided by the company. We began with a short drive in a company van (maybe 10-15 mins) on a HC 4WD road, followed by a short hike (maybe 2 miles?) over a hand cut trail of clay/ rocky terrain through the jungle that led down to the river. The trail was manageable in my hike-compatible water shoes. It was slippery in places, but not sink into the mud slick despite recent rain. There was really no concerning cliff exposure. Our guide kept a reasonable pace and also carried hiking poles in her bag if anyone needed to borrow one for extra stability. One of the 6 people on the tour found it helpful to use a hiking pole for the downhills. Once we reached the river, we were able to swim and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, Our guide gave us plenty of time to take pictures; it was very relaxing. We visited 2 spectacular caves that were very large/ open. Our guide told us about the plants/ animals that we saw throughout the trip. The scenery was fantastic- a great contrast between beach days- we were really glad we went. It was one of our favorite parts of our trip to Puerto Rico.
Logistics: GPS localization of the company headquarters is about 14 km east of its actual location. The directions on the website are great, but they don't mention that it will take you over 20 minutes from the time you turn off highway 10 onto Rt 111 to reach the meet-up point. The road is quite reasonable and the other drivers are very courteous, but it is not a fast drive on 111. Very safe area to park your car at the shop. When on the trip walking around in the river area, you will have to wade into the river about thigh deep to make it to the caves, so come in shoes/ pants that you don't mind getting wet. Do not try this hike in flip-flops or Chacos (although Keens would probably work), it is too steep/ slippery. As others have mentioned, a backpack dry bag to hold snacks/ water etc, and a small clear dry bag for your phone will be helpful. I wore long sleeve shirt and full-length leggings and felt comfortable. To my surprise, there were no bugs/ biting insects. Interestingly, there were 2 people on our trip who signed up to do the more intense rappeling adventure. They travelled with us, and separated for about 30 minutes to do that part, so theoretically if only some in your party want to rappel and others do not, then probably you could still all go together?

This was an amazing adventure. cool sights, wading through the river was neat, beautiful formations to see. Walked through a cave with lights for a little while. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the area as well as safety. Would highly recommend for those in good shape and with shoes that have good grip as there are slippery rocks to climb down. Driving to the location was an adventure of its own. You need to drive cautiously through the narrow roads. Would recommend

This adventure was spectacular. Fernando was very helpful when booking the tour and called me back right away. The scenery and caves were well worth the hike and our guide, Mariel, was awesome. She was veryinformative and made the trip fun. I highly recommend this adventure.

Highly recommend! We did the butterfly tour which includes rapelling, exploring some caverns, creeking, and hiking. Everything about it was beautiful and the guides were super-knowledgeable and friendly. It was tiring for sure but a great experience!

This unique experience was by far the best part of our visit to Puerto Rico. Directions to the meeting spot were clear. For Americans: take highway 111 and stop at mile marker 48.4. Look for business. Parking available next to business. We were fitted with helmets and life jackets. Next we jumped into a van that drove us 10 min to the start of our hike. Our guide Kevin was kind, patient and well versed in knowledge of the local plants, culture and river history. The hike was moderate to advance in some areas. With the recent rains the hike was muddy. Many of us slipped and fell. We mostly laughed it off. Walking sticks helped. Prior to reaching the river, we stopped at a cave and learned about the limestone rock formations and the local bat population. Once we reached the river, we floated across to the other side. Yup, you were fully immersed in the river so bring water tight bags for your cell phones. The plants, landscape and rock formations were incredible. We visited a second cave formation before taking a snack break and heading back the way we came. The entire experience was approximately 4 hours, great leg work out and one of a kind experience. Afterwards we visited Kevin’s family’s local bakery where we enjoyed locally made pastries and rotisserie chicken. Yum!

This was so fun! We did the Mukaro tour with Kevin who was the best tour guide and the trip was the perfect amount of hiking and exploring. It was about 5 hours long. Don’t take a backpack unless you are willing to get it completely wet but definitely bring snacks/water! I would recommend one of the little phone holders that goes around your neck. The drive up is a little rough but the experience is 10/10 and I can’t recommend it enough

Hello, was excited to book a trip for our family - but website shows no availability for all of November, December, and January, and voicemail is full. Is the program still operating? Thanks.

Hi,
We left most of our belongings in the car, which was parked right in front of their facility. We did take with us our cellphones and wallet. The guides brought with them a water prove bag where they collected whatever articles you bring, such as phones, that you want to keep dry. However they are not responsible for any damage.
Our tour was fantastic & fun, and the guides were very helpful all the way through.

What option did you take for the tour. We have all ages wanting to go 17yrs to 71yrs. I was wanting to see how strenuous it was for a group? Which option would be best or can some of us take the more strenuous and meet up later with the other group in the tour.

We went with option number 2, cave tubing and hike and It is strenuous as you are walking through rivers with slippery rocks and will definitely trip at some point, also the hike back up the mountain isn’t easy, you have to climb up a waterfall and then it’s fairly steep and it’s about 30 or more minutes back up. It is possible for part of your group to stick with option 1 and do the cave tubing and hang around the river area while the rest of the group continues on but they’ll probably be waiting for you for well over an hour and will still need to hike back up where they came from (different exit than option 2) which would be a 15 minutes or so slightly steep hill. I will say that I saw a person around the age of 70 there last time but I was shocked and worried about how they would manage to get back up so if the older people in your group are active and used to steep hikes then no problem, no matter what the age I would say this is an intermediate hike.

Saludos. Tenemos varias opciones sin Rappelling o "sogas". No es necesario el Rappelling para llegar a las cuevas y río.

Hi everyone, has anyone done a tour since the hurricane? And if so, did you make the drive from San Juan? I am worried about the condition of the roads as we would be renting a car for it. Thanks so much for any help!!

Hola! Yes we are open since December. All the roads are good. We are having tours every week.
Tanama River Adventures offers five different options on our website. We are open 7 days a week and our tours are always with reservation, departing at 9 am.
To make reservation we ask for a contact phone number, the option number from our Website, number of people involved, and the date. We need a minimum of 4 people to go out in a regular tour. To go out on a rappelling tour we need at least 6 people or more. No deposit is required, you pay the day of your Adventures. We open doors at 8 am and depart with the Tours at 9 am. Only morning sessions. We have a weight limit of "240" pounds. Directions are on our website.
You can follow Google maps directions. We are located in the municipality of Utuado, near "Caguana Ceremonial Indian grounds".
Let us know any information needed.
Gracias!

Hi Sharla, I'm curious what you were able to do on this tour (tubing? through caves? see any petroglyphs? hiking?) as I've heard some of the standard Tanama river attractions are unavailable post-Hurricane Maria. Thanks!

How far in advance should we book a tour? We will be in Puerto Rico in July (staying in Las Marias) and would love to participate in either #4 or #5. I understand that you need a limited number of people per group to offer the rappelling tour, so if that minimum is not met because no one else joins (as there are only 2 of us), then we would be happy to participate in any of the tours for that day. (on Either July 11th or July 12th.) We look forward to hearing back!

You can book anytime. They will confirm your reservation and will contact you few days before the event to let you know if the weather allows the tour to go. Contact them directly, they are very friendly and very acomodate. You will probably talk to Fernando which is the owner, he will answer all your questions and will let you know options. We were 5 on our group and we had a great experience. Don't miss it.
Do i need a waterproof backpack for this? I want to bring water and my camera gear. Any other suggestions of things to bring?
